2,3,5,6-Tetrachloroterephthalic acid is a chlorinated hydrocarbon that is used as an intermediate in the production of other chemicals. It is also known as chlorthal-dimethyl and has been shown to interact with mitochondrial cytochromes. 2,3,5,6-Tetrachloroterephthalic acid has been found to have a cytotoxic effect on bacterial strains. The effect of this chemical on humans and other mammals is not yet known. 2,3,5,6-Tetrachloroterephthalic acid can be analyzed through gas chromatography or nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. This chemical may be carcinogenic to humans and animals when it is inhaled or ingested in large doses. In addition to being toxic to living organisms at high doses, it may also cause eye irritation and skin sensitization in some individuals.
