Tetramethylbenzene is an organic compound with the molecular formula C6H4(CH3)4. It is a colorless liquid. Tetramethylbenzene is used as a precursor to other chemicals and as a solvent for waxes, resins, and oils. The steric interactions between the methyl groups in tetramethylbenzene are important for its reaction mechanism. Tetramethylbenzene reacts with hydrochloric acid to form hydrocarbons. This reaction is catalyzed by metal carbonyls, such as iron pentacarbonyl or nickel carbonyl. Tetramethylbenzene has high resistance to light emission and can be used in light-emitting diodes (LEDs).
