The drug binds to the nuclear matrix and affects the rate of transcription and replication. It also inhibits the production of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) by binding to its receptor on cells. 1,8,9-Trihydroxyanthracene has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of both cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase enzymes by binding to their active sites. This drug can be used as part of a combination therapy for bowel disease with other drugs such as dithranol or chemiluminescent probes.
