Trans-2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-dioxane-2,5-dimethanol (DOD) is a nonpolar compound that has been shown to have anti-infective properties. DOD binds to the fatty acid and polycarboxylic acid regions of bacterial cell membranes and inhibits the production of proteins vital for cell division. DOD also has an effective dose, which can be increased by adding oxygen nucleophiles such as erythromycin. It is stereoselective and reacts with only one stereoisomer of the molecule. The drug is reversible covalent and is used in health care products such as topical creams.
