2,4,4-Trimethyl-2-pentanol is a chemical that is used in the production of certain plastics. It is also used as an analytical reagent for the determination of protein synthesis in biological samples and has been shown to inhibit renal cell carcinogenesis in rats. 2,4,4-Trimethyl-2-pentanol inhibits protein synthesis by binding to amino acids at the ribosomal A site. This binding blocks the initiation reaction and prevents translocation of tRNA from the A site to the P site. The inhibition constant for 2,4,4-Trimethyl-2-pentanol was determined to be 0.012 mM using gel chromatography with acetate extract from human urine and rat kidney homogenates.
