Theaflavin is a member of the flavonoid family and is found in black tea. Theaflavin has been shown to inhibit the progression of chronic bowel disease by reducing oxidative stress and increasing antioxidant activity. It also appears to have a protective effect against oxidative injury in other models. Theaflavin has also been found to be an effective inhibitor of human leukemia cells, which may be due to its ability to disrupt the mitochondrial membrane potential and activate caspases. This compound also inhibits the growth of opportunistic fungal infections by inhibiting protein synthesis and interfering with cell-wall synthesis.
