The reaction mechanism is often a 1,2-addition of the nucleophile to the carbonyl group of 2-(trifluoromethoxy)aniline. This reaction is catalytic and produces a stable dimerized product. 2-(Trifluoromethoxy)aniline also has mesoporous properties, which allow it to be used in reactions involving alcohols or other polar molecules because they are soluble in the pores.
