Tetraethylammonium chloride (TEACl) is a cationic ion that is used as an electrolyte in electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. It has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of potassium channels, which are involved in the transmission of nerve impulses. In addition, TEACl has been shown to inhibit axonal growth and promote neuronal death by inhibiting the production of cytosolic Ca2+. This drug also inhibits the activity of polymerase chain reactions (PCRs), which are enzymes that synthesize DNA. The inhibition of PCRs can be reversed by adding chloride ions to the solution. TEACl could potentially be used as a pharmacological agent for the treatment of various neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease.
