Transfluthrin is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide that has been used for the treatment of filariasis, malaria and other insect-borne diseases. It is a mixture of different fatty acids with a long-term efficacy against mosquitoes and other insects. Transfluthrin is applied as a spray or fogging agent. The mechanism of action of transfluthrin is not well understood, but it appears to be related to its inhibition of acetylcholinesterase activity in the insect nervous system. Transfluthrin has been shown to have genotoxic effects in human cells, which are dependent on dose.
