Thiophanate-methyl is a fungicide that has been used extensively in agriculture and urban areas. It is used to control plant diseases caused by fungi, such as powdery mildew. Thiophanate-methyl can be detected in water using dispersive solid-phase extraction (DSPE) with detection limits of 0.5 parts per billion (ppb). This method is used for the analysis of wastewater samples where it has been shown to have a matrix effect on the analytical process. The DSPE technique was also shown to be useful for the detection of genotoxic effects in vitro.
