Tetra-n-octylammonium bromide is a model system for nanoparticles that are composed of sodium citrate and tetra-n-octylammonium bromide. The nanoparticles have been shown to be effective in inhibiting the mitochondrial membrane potential, which is essential for cell function. Tetra-n-octylammonium bromide has also shown inhibitory activity on dpp-iv inhibitors, which are enzymes that regulate protein synthesis. This model system is used as an analytical method to measure electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. It has been applied to human serum samples and found to have an optimum concentration at 1 mM. Tetra-n-octylammonium bromide also possesses phase transition temperature of about 50°C and optical sensor properties.
