Triacetoxymethylsilane is a reactive chemical that is used to form a sealant on the surface of polymer films. It reacts with water vapor and Zirconium oxide, forming a cross-linked polymeric matrix that is chemically stable. Triacetoxymethylsilane has been used in the fabrication of zirconia dental implants and as a sealant for optical fiber cables. The hydroxyl group of triacetoxymethylsilane reacts with boron nitride to form an amide bond, which can be used as a cross-linking agent for hydrophobic materials. Triacetoxymethylsilane also has the ability to react with fatty acids to form esters, which are useful in making superparamagnetic iron nanoparticles.
