4-(Trifluoromethylsulfonyl)Chlorobenzene is a carbocyanine dye. In its neutral form, 4-(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)chlorobenzene is a styryl dye with a hypsochromic effect. This compound belongs to the class of merocyanine dyes, which have a bathochromic effect and are usually used as fluorescent indicators in analytical chemistry. It can be synthesized from benzindoxazinone and 2-aminothiophenol, or by the reaction of styrene with sodium chloroacetate in the presence of hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide. The substituents on the aromatic ring determine whether this compound will be merocyanine or styryl.
