Vamidothion is a chemical agent that is used to control the growth of bacteria in animal health and food preservation. It is a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist, which blocks the binding of acetylcholine at the postsynaptic membrane. This prevents stimulation of muscle contraction and paralysis of smooth muscle. Vamidothion has been shown to be effective against high-resistant bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica, when combined with anhydrous sodium carbonate, matrix effect, or chromatographic method.
