Zirconocene then reacts with activated sodium salts in the presence of water vapor to form the corresponding zirconium oxide. This process is reversible and has been shown to be a single-step reaction that produces high yields of zirconium oxide. The deuterium isotope effect has been observed in this process, which is due to the incorporation of deuterium into the product.
