The reaction produces two products: 1,6-diacetoxyhexane and dimethyl hexanedioate. 1,6-Diacetoxyhexane is used as an ingredient in food compositions and as a solvent for organic compounds. It is also used in the production of surfactants and other chemicals. 1,6-Diacetoxyhexane has been shown to reduce the catalytic activity of oxidizing agents such as hydrogen peroxide and permanganates.
