Dioctyl terephthalate is a polycarboxylic acid that has been used in the production of polyvinyl. It has reactive properties and can be used for histological analysis. Dioctyl terephthalate is also toxic and has shown to have different toxicity profiles depending on the method of exposure (e.g., inhalation, ingestion). Dioctyl terephthalate can be detected in urine samples with the aid of mass spectrometry, in which it appears as a molecular ion at m/z 476.6. The detection of this compound in human metabolism may be due to its presence in food packaging materials such as plastic wrappers or containers.
