4-Cyanophenyl ether is a biphenyl compound that can be synthesized by the reaction of 4-cyanophenol and phenylmagnesium bromide. This compound has been shown to undergo ring opening under acidic conditions with sodium carbonate, which is catalyzed by aluminium or cocatalysts such as hydrogencarbonates. The biphenyl product can be obtained through a kinetic process at temperatures ranging from 50-100 °C, with the rate of reaction being dependent on the concentration of biphenyl.
