It can be synthesized by nitro group substitution of 4-nitrophenylacetic acid. 4-Nitrostilbene is soluble in dichloromethane, chloroform, ethers, and other solvents. The molecule has a molecular weight of 186.4 g/mol and a melting point of 120 °C. 4-Nitrostilbene has the functional groups nitro, nitroso, and carboxylic acid. This compound emits light when heated or irradiated with ultraviolet light or visible light sources such as lasers, LEDs, or halogen lamps. The fluorescence properties of this substance have been extensively studied using fluorescence techniques. Crystal x-ray diffraction studies show that the molecule is linear with a C3v symmetry and contains two fused rings (benzene) with an electron withdrawing group on one ring
