±-Methyllevulinic acid is a treatment for patients with type 2 diabetes that is used to lower blood sugar levels. It has been shown to work by inhibiting the activity of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase, which is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of oxaloacetate to phosphoenolpyruvate and inorganic phosphate.
