C20-D-erythro-Sphingosine is a fatty acid that belongs to the sphingolipid class. It is synthesized from C18-D-erythrosphingosine, which is formed by the addition of a hydroxyl group to C18:1. The enzyme that catalyzes this reaction is called sphingomyelin synthase. C20-D-erythro-Sphingosine can be found in cerebellar granules and gangliosides of the brain, as well as in several types of cell cultures, such as those derived from cerebellar cells or cultured cells from various tissues. In these cells, it is found in the form of ceramide trihexoside (C36). This molecule has been shown to enhance magnetic resonance spectroscopy signals for metabolites related to metabolism disorders and biochemical composition.
