4-Isobutoxy-2-butanone (4IBB) is a volatile chemical that has been shown to be useful in the diagnosis of bladder and prostate cancer. It is a non-invasive, discriminative chemical that can be detected by breath analysis. 4IBB has been shown to have a sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 100% for the detection of bladder cancer in patients who have undergone cystoscopy. The specificity was also 100% for prostate cancer in patients who had undergone transrectal ultrasound or biopsy. 4IBB has also been validated using controls, with no false positives found at concentrations up to 2200 ppb.
