Ethyl 3-cyano-2-oxopropanoate is a lipid-lowering agent that is structurally related to guanidine, which is a natural amino acid. It stimulates soluble guanylate cyclase and causes an increase in the level of intracellular cyclic nucleotides (cGMP) by inhibiting the breakdown of cGMP. Ethyl 3-cyano-2-oxopropanoate has been shown to have antihypertensive effects, as it can reduce blood pressure in hypertensive animals. This compound also has a beneficial effect on cardiovascular disease, as it lowers cholesterol levels and reduces atherosclerotic plaque formation. Ethyl 3-cyano-2-oxopropanoate also has an antidepressant effect, which may be due to its ability to inhibit reuptake of serotonin and dopamine neurotransmitters.
