Nojirimycin bisulfite is a planteose that belongs to the class of β-glucosidase inhibitors. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria from human feces and intestinal flora. Nojirimycin bisulfite has potent inhibition against the β-glucosidases in human gut, which are involved in carbohydrate metabolism. Nojirimycin bisulfite also inhibits the growth of Gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Clostridium perfringens, by binding to cell walls and inhibiting enzyme activity. This compound has also been shown to have an inhibitory effect on nitrogen fixation in legumes and inhibits germination rate in seeds.
