µ-Thiocaprolactam is a thione molecule with two nitrogen atoms. It is a low energy, metal ion-containing compound that has been shown to be effective at inhibiting nicotine self-administration in rats and the release of glucagon-like peptide (GLP) from pancreatic cells. µ-Thiocaprolactam binds to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, a protein found on the surface of neurons, and prevents it from activating. This binding also prevents the release of GLP from pancreatic cells, which may be due to its ability to form ternary complexes with metal ions and oxygen.
