Descrizione:Sodium iodate is a chemical compound with the formula NaIO3. It is an ionic salt that has a high solubility in water and can be used as an oxidizing agent. Sodium iodate is also used in the treatment of eye disorders and to generate radioactive iodine for nuclear medicine imaging. The physiological effects of sodium iodate have been studied extensively, although long-term toxicity data are limited due to its low-level environmental presence. Histology studies show that intravitreal injections of sodium iodate cause oxidative injury to retinal cells, which may lead to blindness if untreated. Growth factor-β1 is a protein secreted by the retina that stimulates cell proliferation, survival, and differentiation. Studies have shown that growth factor-β1 protects against oxidative injury in retinal cells caused by sodium iodate exposure.
