Cerium(III) fluoride trihydrate has been used as a tracer for hydrogen fluoride (HF), which is a product of the reaction between cerium and HF. Cerium(III) fluoride trihydrate can be used to measure the kinetic data of this reaction. It has also been used in the treatment of wastewater, where it can reduce or remove malonic acid, one of its major components. This compound has been shown to be stable in plasma mass spectrometry and fluorescence spectrometry experiments. Cerium(III) fluoride trihydrate is also used in photomultiplier tube experiments as an activator for other materials such as zirconium oxide. This compound can also be used to prepare samples for thermal expansion measurements or radiation detection experiments.
