9-(2-Nitrovinyl)anthracene is an acrylonitrile derivative that has been shown to induce apoptosis in malignant cells. This compound is also a novel chiral building block for the synthesis of taxol and other biologically active compounds. 9-(2-Nitrovinyl)anthracene can be prepared by the reaction of triflic acid with anthracene. The chloroformate ester of 9-(2-nitrovinyl)anthracene is hydrolyzed in water to give the corresponding acid, which can then be converted to its sodium salt. The nitro group on the aromatic ring is reduced to an amine by hydrogenation, after which it undergoes nucleophilic substitution with an alcohol.
