The compound was first synthesized by condensation of 2,4,6-trichloropyrimidine with formaldehyde and sodium hydroxide. 4,6-Dichloro-N-methylpyrimidin-2-amine can be converted to the corresponding hydrochloride salt by treatment with hydrochloric acid. The compound reacts with methanol to produce methylamine. It also undergoes acid hydrolysis to produce methyl chloride and formaldehyde.
