tetrabromo-m-xylene is a heterocyclic compound that contains an imidazole ring. It is used as a reactant in organic synthesis, for example to produce acetals and benzylamine. The oxidation of tetrabromo-m-xylene with sodium dichromate in the presence of sulfuric acid leads to the formation of a mixture of orthoformates and esters. The ring substituents can be removed by reaction with alcohols or amines. Tetrabromo-m-xylene may also react with primary amines to form acetals and orthoformates or with trialkylsilanes to form esters. This chemical has a functional group that can be recognized by electron withdrawing groups such as bromine, chlorine, or iodine.
