The fluorescence of this compound is inversely proportional to the activity of phosphatases. This compound can be used as a substrate for phosphatases, which are enzymes that break down phosphate groups from compounds such as ATP, ADP, and AMP. 4-Methylumbelliferyl phosphate, dilithium salt reacts with surface antigens on cells and shows reproducible results when screened with monoclonal antibodies.
