Althiomycin is an antibiotic that belongs to the group of synthetic antibiotics. It has a broad spectrum of activity and can be used for the treatment of both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Althiomycin is also an antiparasitic agent that can be used for the treatment of protozoal infections. It is active against viruses, fungi, and some parasites. Althiomycin has been shown to inhibit the growth of HIV in cell cultures. The compound also inhibits DNA synthesis by blocking the function of bacterial DNA polymerase and RNA synthesis by blocking ribosomes.
