Syringaresinol is a natural phenylpropanoid glycoside that has been shown to inhibit the activity of PTP1B, an enzyme that is involved in the activation of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Syringaresinol also inhibits the activity of HIV-1 protease and other enzymes involved in inflammatory disease. Syringaresinol has potent inhibitory activities against biphenyl, an important industrial chemical with carcinogenic properties, and can also be used as a food additive. The antioxidative properties of syringaresinol have been demonstrated by its ability to inhibit lipid peroxidation in biomimetic systems. Syringaresinol has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory and immunodeficiency effects in animal models. It can be used as a therapeutic agent for inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's disease.
