It is a monosaccharide sugar with an alkyl group at C6 and an amine group at C2. The compound has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth by inhibiting DNA synthesis. This inhibition leads to the production of less nucleotides and nucleic acids necessary for DNA replication. The methylation at C2 is critical for this inhibitory effect.
