2,3,5-Tri-O-benzyl-1,4-dideoxy-1,4-epithio-D-arabinitol is a compound that belongs to the family of thiosugars. It has been isolated from a variety of plant sources and has been shown to have inhibitory activity against the growth of bacteria. 2,3,5-Tri-O-benzyl-1,4-dideoxy-1,4 epithio D arabinitol inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the enzyme formate dehydrogenase and thereby prevents the formation of formate. This compound also inhibits salacinol and thiosugar synthesis in extracts of plants such as Salacia reticulata. 2,3,5 Tri O Benzyl 1,4 dideoxy 1 4 epithio D arabinitol is also found in the Ayurvedic medicine water extract known as voglibose.
