D-Xylulose 5-phosphate lithium salt is a chiral ester that is used in the synthesis of natural products. It has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of bacterial growth and its use as an antibiotic may be limited due to its toxicity in humans. The enzyme activities of this compound are monitored by measuring the levels of glucose, lactate, pyruvate, acetate, and ethanol in serum samples taken at different time intervals after administration.
