3'-Amino-2',3'-dideoxycytidine is a nucleoside analog that inhibits the synthesis of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) by acting as an inhibitor of DNA polymerase. It is used in mammalian cell cultures to study enzyme activities, and has been shown to inhibit the replication of some viruses. 3'-Amino-2',3'-dideoxycytidine has been shown to be effective against HIV. The uptake of 3'-amino-2',3'-dideoxycytidine into cells is stereoselective, with uptake into human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) being greater than for untreated control cells. 3'-Amino-2',3'-dideoxycytidine may also have a therapeutic effect on HIV due to its inhibitory effects on enzymes such as enolate and cellular lysis.
