It is an activator of ribonucleotide synthesis, a process in which the 5'-phosphate group is attached to the 3' hydroxyl group of a ribose sugar molecule. This phosphoramidite has antiviral and anticancer activities. 3'-Azido-3'-deoxy-5'-O-MMT-D3-thymidine has been shown to inhibit viral replication by inhibiting viral reverse transcriptase, an enzyme required for viral replication. It also inhibits DNA synthesis in cancer cells, leading to apoptosis (programmed cell death) and cell cycle arrest.
