The formyl group in the molecule interacts with the heterocyclic ring of the enzyme, while the benzylpenicillin moiety binds to the beta-lactamase, leading to inhibition. Formylpenicillamine has been shown to be effective against organisms such as Bacillus licheniformis and Staphylococcus aureus, although it does not work against Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Enterobacteriaceae.
