N6-Benzoyl-L-adenosine is a novel nucleoside that has been shown to have antiviral and anticancer activity. It is synthesized by the reaction of L-adenosine with benzoyl chloride in the presence of a base. The drug inhibits the growth of cancer cells by interfering with DNA synthesis. N6-Benzoyl-L-adenosine also inhibits viral replication, especially HIV, herpes simplex virus type 1, and human cytomegalovirus (HCMV).
