Pyrifenox is a fungicide used to control plant diseases caused by fungi. It is an inhibitor of the multidrug efflux pump, which are transmembrane proteins that expel xenobiotics from cells. Pyrifenox inhibits the multidrug efflux pump and thus prevents the expulsion of toxic substances from cells, leading to cell death. This chemical can be used as an antifungal agent for chronic pulmonary infections and fungal growth in agricultural crops. Pyrifenox also inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase, which is required for electron transport and aerobic respiration. The basic structure of pyrifenox consists of a polymeric matrix with an anhydrous sodium salt at its core.
