It is a protonated molecule with strong metal ion affinity and can be used to bind to Alzheimer's disease or obsessive compulsive disorder. 4-(4-Chlorophenyl)-4H,5H,6H,7H-thieno[3,2-c]pyridine has been shown to inhibit the activity of acetylcholinesterase by binding to the active site of this enzyme. This inhibition leads to an increase in the levels of acetylcholine in the brain and an increase in the number of neurons activated. 4-(4-Chlorophenyl)-4H,5H,6H,7H-thieno[3,2-c]pyridine also inhibits serotonin
