Ribonucleosides are nucleoside derivatives that can be used as antiviral agents. Ribonuclease (RNase) is a type of ribonucleoside that acts as an antiviral agent by inhibiting the synthesis of RNA in cells. Ribonuclease has been shown to inhibit the growth of HIV-1 and HIV-2 in vitro, and may also have therapeutic potential for other viruses such as herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1).
