It is also used in the production of sphingolipids and other membrane lipids. cis,cis-5,8-tetradecadiensäure has been shown to inhibit oviposition and egg laying by female insects such as Drosophila melanogaster and Tribolium castaneum. cis,cis-5,8-tetradecadiensäure inhibits the biosynthesis of fatty acids in insect fat bodies. This inhibition leads to sublethal doses that are effective at preventing ovipositional behavior.
