Melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) is a neuropeptide that is used to study the regulation of food intake and body weight. MCH binds to its receptor, the melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R), which is coupled to an ion channel. This binding causes the release of potassium ions from cells, leading to depolarization and increased neuronal excitability. It has been shown that MCH can be used as a research tool for studying ion channels, ligand-receptor interactions, and cell biology.
