Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) is a weak organic acid that is used as an analytical reagent in the chemical industry. TFA is also used as a solvent for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, and as a reactant in organic chemistry. Trifluoroacetic acid has been shown to inhibit bowel disease by lowering the pH of the large intestine and inhibiting hydrogen fluoride production. The optimum concentration of trifluoroacetic acid is 0.2 M at 25°C.
