• Descrizione: 2,2',3,3',4,5',6,6'-Octachlorobiphenyl (OCB) is a polychlorinated biphenyl that has been used as an extraction solvent for fats and oils. OCB is a mixture of octachloro-substituted biphenyls with varying degrees of chlorination. The different chlorination levels are correlated to the solubility of the individual compounds. In particular, 4- and 6-chlorinated biphenyls have been found to be more soluble than 3- or 5-chlorinated biphenyls. Spectroscopic methods can be used to determine the abundances of each type of compound in the mixture. Further spectrometric analysis can be used to identify which compounds are present at what concentrations. Hexane is often used as a solvent during this process because it dissolves all four types of compounds equally well. Mass spectrometric analysis can then be used to measure the concentration
