Rac-3-Hydroxyoctadecanoic acid is an organic compound with the formula CH(CH)COOH. It is a fatty acid that belongs to the group of hydroxyacids. Rac-3-hydroxyoctadecanoic acid has a hydroxyl group, which can form hydrogen bonds with other molecules and proteins. The type strain for this compound is Escherichia coli. Rac-3-hydroxyoctadecanoic acid has been synthesized from lauric acid and sodium borohydride in an alkaline process. Rac-3-hydroxyoctadecanoic acid also has two isomers, 3R and 3S, which differ in the position of the hydroxyl group on the carbon chain. This fatty acid occurs naturally in animal tissues and desulfurizes by removing hydrogen sulfate groups from sulfur compounds.
