Methyl 4-chloro-2-nitrobenzoate is a synthetic molecule that inhibits the translation of mRNA into protein. It has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of hepatitis B virus RNA, and to prevent the activation of ribosomes. The molecule is activated by fluoride ions, which make it react with tetramethylammonium cations to form a fluorinated compound. The crystal structure of methyl 4-chloro-2-nitrobenzoate has been determined at 1.5 Å resolution, and its translation inhibition activity was confirmed by in vitro experiments.
