It is insoluble in water, but soluble in ethanol and ether. 1-Ethynyl-4-(phenylethynyl)benzene has an optical yield of 90% and fluorescence. The molecule has been shown to absorb at 280 nm. This compound has been used as a monomer for the preparation of polymers, which are useful for their optical properties. Transmetallation reactions have been observed with this compound, which is attributed to its nature as a terminal alkyne.
